Many of you know that our church underwent an enormous and much-needed renovation project a little over two years ago. While we are enjoying our newly-renovated facilities, and have made significant headway in paying off the project, we are still paying on the debt acquired to make the necessary improvements. David Hardin and the Board of Trustees are in the process of putting together our (hopefully) first-annual barbecue fund raiser for Saturday, May 22. All of the proceeds from the event will go towards the debt from Restoring the Glory. David is assembling a team of church men to borrow or bring smokers and do the cooking to sell barbecue plate lunches. There will also be on that day a bake sale, silent auction, live auction, kids’ activities and possibly a youth group car wash. Between now and then, we will be collecting items to put in the auctions such as autographed sports memorabilia, framed artwork, or other new or used items of value on which people might want to bid. Here is a recent letter from trustees chair, David Hardin about the event.
To My Fellow Church Members,
Regarding the event for May 22, 2010 (Beef, Bakes & Bids Bazaar Fundraiser). I just wanted to let everyone know a little about the fundraiser. While I was on the UM Army trip last year in Angleton, the men of their church cooked for us one evening. I was able to talk with one of them about an annual BBQ fundraiser they have established for their church. I got excited about the amount of money they are able to raise for their Glory to God. While they use this money for Mission trips and a new Fellowship Hall, their little town being about the same size as ours, I thought of how we could try the same thing here. Along with Bruce and the Board of Trustees we decided to have 100% of this years money go to pay on Restoring the Glory debt. This will be a full day for our Church, with a BBQ meal, Auction, Bake Sale and Children’s games, etc. We have also been blessed to have the Christian Band, “JUDGE NOT”, donating their time for the event as well, with a concert in the parking lot.
As we all get excited about this upcoming event, I have been confronted with a lot of questions about the auction. We have a professional auctioneer that has volunteered his time for us that day, and there will also be a silent auction area for small items. So as you can see this has the potential to be a big success for our church. With items like a new deer stand, outdoor fire pit, babysitting time and assorted tools we have already had donated, you can see that no item is too small or too large. If you or anyone you know has something that will sell, that’s what we are looking for. From collectables, paintings. knives, day spa treatments, weekend getaways for couples or a small group via lake houses or a bed and breakfast, fishing or hunting trips, quilts, yard work, etc. you can see the list just goes on and on. Anything of value that will sell is what we’re looking for.
Also, we need to be selling tickets for the BBQ plates. We have the tickets in the Church office. The presale of these tickets will help us determine how much food needs to be purchased ahead of time. Please make a point of stopping by and picking up some tickets to sell to family, friends and co-workers.
If you are interested in volunteering to help please contact:
Al Lightfoot or Gary Conner — BBQ Brisket cooking; Kirby McCord — Serving team;
Larry Lamely — Kitchen team; Liz Stokes — Beans & Cole slaw; David Hardin — Auction
The UMW ladies have volunteered to help with the cake sale, but we still need someone to head up the cake sale team. And we will be needing a large amount of donated homemade cakes, pies and cookies.
We will be placing collection boxes in each Sunday school class, on Sunday April 18th for donations. These boxes are for cash/check donations that can go to the purchase of food or auction items. Or, if you have an item for the auction please drop a note in the box letting us know, and who we need to contact. For those not in Sunday School, your donations can be dropped at the church office. Please make checks out to FUMC.
I want to thank everyone for getting involved & excited about this wonderful event. I feel the Lord brought this opportunity to all of us, and we should all please remember this is for the Glory of God through FUMC.
Any questions or comments please feel free to ask or call me at 903-731-0864.
